Hello! My name is Gayle Schaad. If you call our office or e-mail us, I am the person you will most likely be talking to. I would like to tell you a bit more about us. .
Fruitdale Nursery Company began as a family owned and operated wholesale nursery. The founders were: Gordon Schaad and his father, Roland Schaad, Gordon's mother, Myrtle, myself, Gordon's wife, and our two sons Travis, age 7 and Nathan, age 4. Roland had been a professor of agriculture at Oregon State University and an extension agent in Union County for many years and together with Gordon, farmed close to 1000 acres of wheat, barley, and grass seed. Gordon's background in Botany and farming as well as his love for growing things were a perfect match for the new venture. Myrtle, a schoolteacher, was a master gardener of many years. My background was also education, but I grew up growing gardens and flowers alongside my father who was an Oregon State Ag graduate himself and a master gardener. This love of growing things was in my blood.
The company began by raising field grown and container nursery stock for wholesale markets and for our own retail garden center. We started to receive many requests for the old-fashioned apple trees that we hand grafted onto hardy root stocks and soon we had a catalog that, along with our apple and other fruit tree varieties, was being requested across the U. S.
By the mid 1980's there were fewer requests from home orchardists and the fruit tree production was phased out to allow for concentration on the retail garden center and greenhouses.
During the 1990's due to the proliferation of mass discount-store garden centers and our desire for a less hectic lifestyle we retired from the retail scene and continued to grow wholesale greenhouse material. It was during this time that we discovered Tainio Technology products. And the discovery marked a big change for this nursery/farm family. Not only did we discover that by adding the Tainio microbial formulations we would achieve optimal soil and plant health, we also discovered that these optimally healthy plants were not a target for insects and disease! That year our greenhouse crops were never sprayed for insects or disease because there were none, for the first time in a 21-year growing history!
We wasted no time in picking up a distributorship for these biological products and as of 2002, Fruitdale Nursery is exclusively dedicated to the distribution of Tainio Technology and Technique Biological Ag Management Programs.
Well, the years have gone by and Roland and Myrtle have passed on. The boys, Travis and Nathan have grown to be men. Travis, has a career in law enforcement. Nathan has rejoined the company as a product representative working out of the Portland area. Gordon's brother David, in Bakersfield, CA has a degree in soil science as well as business and is a product representative in that area. Gayle's brother, Tom, with a long career in sales has also come aboard..
So, we continue in the family tradition and our customers are fast becoming part of our extended family. We hope you will join us. All together we are doing our part to insure safe, nutritionally balanced soils, plants, food and water along with experiencing phenomenal success with all different crops resulting in increased profit margins for all.
